What's Happening in Battle Creek

Battle Creek, located in south-central lower Michigan is a wonderful city. It is home to many great companies, most notably the World Headquarters for the Kellogg Company. Known around the world as the "Cereal City", Battle Creek also hosts producation facilities for Post l and Ralston Purina cereals. The Kellogg Company also produces many other types of food and is working with Battle Creek Unlimited on  an initiative to position Battle Creek to be a leader in Food Safety in the United States. Battle Creek also hosts many automotive facilities and some alternative energy manufacturing, as well as many other prosperus businesses. Battle Creek has many wonderful opportunities for its residents. With four great school districts and private schools, several very good colleges, wonderful recreational opportunities, and several philanthropic foundations, it really is a great place to live and raise a family.

Willard Library

There is always something good going on at Willard Library www.willard.lib.mi.us. Coming up on June 18th from 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. is the Hawaiian Lockin.  This event will feature Polynesian dancers who will demonstrate and teach hula dancing. Students will enjoy summer Luau treats, summer games, and other Luau activities. This event is designed for students in grades 6 through 12. Register by calling 968-8166, ext 517. A parent permission slip will be mailed and is required.

Back 2 School Bash

On August 28, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. the annual Back to School Bash will be held at the Battle Creek Y Center Sports Complex. This activity will be highlighted by many community organizations who will be working to make sure all children in Battle Creek are ready to head back to school. Many families will receive a Red Wagon filled with information and school supplies. Help make this year's Bash a success. Youth Services Work Group

The Youth Services Work Group's mission is to help our most vulnerable youth  be successful in life and to graduate from high school. The YSWG is charied by Anji Phillips, Director of The  Coordinating Council, and members include representatives from the juvenile justice system, the educational community, funder organizations, and the social services community. This group meets from noon to 1:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the United Way of Greater Battle Creek. If you would like to be a part of helping our most vulnerable succeed in life, you are welcome to attend.

Battle Creek Community Literacy Collaborative

The Battle Creek Community Literacy Collaborative (CLC) is a joint venture of the United Way of Greater Battle Creek and the Battle Creek Educators' Task Force. The CLC was originally formed to help bring order to the chaos that was created by the establishment of over 50 unconnected literacy programs. The CLC has attempted to bring all literacy efforts in Battle Creek under one roof. The CLC ahs three work teams, the Adult Work Team, the Early Childhood Work Team and the Communications Work Team. The areas of emphasis for the CLC are family literacy and early childhood literacy. If you would like to find out more about the CLC, please visit their website at www.itstartswithreading.org.

Calhoun County Community Report Card

The Coordinating Council is the Community Collaborative Body of Calhoun County for the State of Michigan.  Its purpose is to establish a collaborative body to address issues impacting the lives of children, families, and special populations identified within the county.
